上海八中开设的首个“上海市男子高中基地实验班”于9月1日正式开学。男生班的课程设置除了市教委规定的基础型课程外，学校还制定了4个领域针对男生班特点的课程，包括“差异理解”、“偶像生成”、“生存体验”、“数字达人”等。

Sixty-four boys have spent their first two weeks of high school at Shanghai's first all-boys class, whose creation at the beginning of the month has been a topic of widespread attention and debate.
上海首个男生班的64名学生已经度过了他们高中生活的前两周，本月初这个班开班时曾引起广泛关注和争论。
All-boys class（男生班）的开设是上海八中的一个experimental program（实验项目），意在解决男生在中学阶段遭遇的boys crisis（男孩危机），即在academic performance（学习成绩）方面boys are outperformed and overshadowed by girls（女生总是优于男生，即“阴盛阳衰”）的状况，同时帮助男生cultivate masculinity（培养阳刚之气）。
男生班的教学方法和课程都是根据男生的psychological and physiological characteristics（心理和生理特点）设置的，避免使用rote memorization（死记硬背）等方法，帮助男生develop his special talents to the utmost（充分发挥自己的特长）。
不过有家长担心，男生班会reduce their ability to #municate with the opposite sex（削弱男生跟异性交流的能力）。
